WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

What is Head Lice?

Head lice are tiny grayish-white insects that infest the hair and scalp, causing itchiness and discomfort. Head lice lay 7 to 10 eggs per day called nits that are tiny yellow, tan, or brown dots near the scalp. Nits can look like dandruff but do not brush off easily. Lice is most common in children and spreads through direct head-to-head contact or sharing personal items like combs, brushes, and hats.

Common symptoms

Symptoms of head lice may include:

  • Itching on the scalp, neck, and ears (most common symptom)
  • Presence of live lice on the scalp
  • Nits (lice eggs) on the base of the scalp or hair shaft
