WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

What is ringworm?

Ringworm, also known as tinea infection, is a fungal skin infection that results in red, circular patches on the skin with a raised, scaly border. It is caused by dermatophyte fungi and can occur on various parts of the body. Ringworm is highly contagious and can spread through direct contact with infected skin or surfaces.

Common symptoms

Symptoms of ringworm may include:

  • On darker skin, ringworm patches can look brown or gray. On lighter skin, ringworm tends to look pink or red
  • Raised, scaly, or crusty border around the patches. The outside raised border may be darker than the inside patch
  • Itching and discomfort in the affected areas
  • Hair loss in cases of scalp ringworm (tinea capitis)
  • Nail changes or fungal infection in cases of nail ringworm (tinea unguium)
